Innovation Platforms writeshop

ILRI campus, Nairobi

JVC Auditorium 27–29 May 2013

Innovation platforms are widely used in agricultural research to connect different stakeholders to achieve common goals. We used a writeshop to develop 12 ‘practice briefs’ to help guide agricultural research practitioners who seek to support and implement innovation platforms. A contribution to the CGIAR Humidtropics research program, the development of the briefs was led by the International Livestock Research Institute; they draw on experiences of the CGIAR Challenge Program on Water and Food, several CGIAR centres and partner organizations.

From 25-31 May, Prolinnova and other partners organize the ‘ Week on Agricultural Innovation in Africa (WAIA)’ in Nairobi

Alongside the other activities ( http:aisa2013.wikispaces.com/) ILRI, the Challenge Program on Water and Food (CPWF) and the CGIAR Research Program on Humidtropics hekd an innovation platforms writeshop (see also http:innovation-platforms.wikispaces.com/) at ILRI Nairobi, 27-29 May. It was facilitated by Paul Mundy – a leader in the writeshop methodology.

We want to use this writeshop to bring together and synthesize key learning and messages from (mainly) CGIAR experiences with innovation platforms (IPs) in Africa. We aim to generate various focused products that can be used to inform future CGIAR , R4D, and associated investments in innovation platforms. These will be shared/validated at the international conference at ILRI on 30 and 31 May.

Participants

We envisage two types of participants in this focused event: 1 – R4D IP ‘practitioners’ and enablers with strong messages to be documented 2 – IP and related specialists who can help refine and critique the products

Content focus

We want to produce various products – mainly a series of short ‘practice briefs’ but other ideas are welcome – around some overarching messages we want to communicate/document.

Examples are:

We set up a surveymonkey to help work out which topics are most important and who is interested in each

  • Building and sustaining innovation capacity through IPs
  • Comms, knowledge and IP processes
  • Contributions of research to IPs
  • Defining IPs; semantics, terminology ...
  • Facilitation, management and sustainability of IPs
  • IPs and national policy-making
  • IPs as vehicle to bring people to markets
  • Linking IPs at different levels and scales
  • Monitoring IPs
  • Power dynamics and representation in IPs
  • Using IPs to support NRM interventions

This is a non-exhaustive list emerging from a small ILRI brainstorming discussion. It needs to be refined further to reflect key experiences and the messages people want to bring to be shared.

In the end, we produced 12 briefs:

1 What are innovation platforms? 2 Innovation platforms to shape national policy 3 Research and innovation platforms 4 Power dynamics and representation in innovation platforms 5 Monitoring innovation platforms 6 Innovation platforms for agricultural value chain development 7 Communication in innovation platforms 8 Developing innovation capacity through innovation platforms 9 Linking action at different levels through innovation platforms 10 Facilitating innovation platforms 11 Innovation platforms to support natural resource management 12 Impact of innovation platforms
